Matt Murdock Dared Evil…and Lost! The battle for the soul of a hero begins! Pushed beyond his limits, Daredevil faces off for a final time against his deadliest foe–Bullseye– in their most brutal battle ever with more than just Hell’s Kitchen is at stake. Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher and more join forces to stop a war that is breaking out throughout New York, with Daredevil at the center. This event will change the streets of New York City—and the heroes that protect it—forever. Plus, a jaw-dropping final page that will have everyone talking for years to come!
A shackled, muzzled and captured Bullseye is being transported to the proper facilities. He devises a plan to escape. He tells the guards that he is the only one that has ever been able to control the Sentry and that he would tell them how to take him down if they let him go. Just then he goes into cardiac arrest. One guard says not to help him because he’s faking. The other wants him taken out of his shackles in helped. When they get him out and on the ground. One guard uses the defibrillator to bring Bullseye back to health and when they do he grabs it and uses it on them taking them both out.
For some reason when Bullseye gets free his first priority is Daredevil so he heads to Shadowland. Meanwhile the Avengers talk about what they are going to do. Luke Cage is worried but Iron Fist seems to think Daredevil is fine and he’s just doing what they do and helping people. Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor seem to be in agreement with Iron Fist and they want Cage and Iron Fist to tell Daredevil they have his back if he can’t get the job done in Hell’s kitchen but also if he doesn’t take Shadowland down when they want him too, they will be his greatest threat.
Knowing that Cage and Danny are the best friends of Daredevil there they were sent to talk to him. When they arrive at Shadowland, Daredevil has already engaged Bullseye in combat and sent the hand after him. When the Hand’s efforts to take him out become apparently ineffective, Daredevil joins the fight himself and completely dominates Bullseye breaking both of his arms. When the fight is over, Cage and Iron Fist look on as Daredevil kills Bullseye the same way Bullseye killed Elektra.
The battle for New York begins as battle lines are drawn and war forges strange allies. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Spider-Man, Moon Knight and…Kingpin?! Plus, a dangerous new player enters the battle, one that could win the fight…or damn all of New York!
The second installment of Shadowland opens in Hell’s Kitchen. The events of the previous issue are covered. A lone undercover cop remarks to himself about what Daredevil has done. He recalls the construction of Shadowland, the Hand ninjas patrolling the streets and in search of some of his fellow officers who are missing. He shatters the glass in his own taxi and the Hand ninjas are instantly on the scene.
Next, we head to a soup kitchen owned by Danny Rand. He and Luke Cage are discussing the actions of Daredevil and whether or not Bullseye deserved what he got. Cage calls it murder while Rand attempting to remain optimistic says you could say it was self defense. Cage disagrees saying Murdock’s actions are only bringing fear to Hell’s Kitchen and he breaks up a scuffle in the soup kitchen.
The Kingpin and Lady Bullseye enter the soup kitchen. Fisk says he wants to return Hell’s Kitchen to legitimate authority and Luke & Danny scoff at his “noble” intentions. Fisk reiterates Cage’s statement about fear ruling the streets and says they’re going to have to take down Daredevil.
The story moves to Daredevil’s throne room in Shadowland. Black tarantula approaches him and says wallowing in guilt isn’t necessary. Daredevil says he feels no guilt or anything. Black Tarantula asks him what he needs and Daredevil says they need reinforcements. They need to expand their area of control and Black Tarantula questions the entire martial law governing Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil says he expects him to follow his orders without question. He is to invite all costumed heroes to join the Hand or become their enemies.
Back to Midtown. Kingpin and Lady Bullseye are apparently taking part in a mystical ritual. There is a pentagram shaped object on the floor and the Kingpin has an ancient scroll in his hand. Lady Bullseye says she had to slay many hand ninjas to obtain it. Kingpin says that the ritual has been prepared and all that remains is the final incantation. This will summon the Zugaikotsu warrior. Lady Bullseye says he is one of the Hand’s most ancient enemies and should be feared. She says he seeks to control him like a child’s plaything. Fisk says all men must bend to his wield and the ancient warrior was a man once.
Fisk utters the incantation in Japanese and Lady Bullseye questions if anything happened or not. Fisk says he can hear it and its getting closer. He says she may wish to duck as something crashes through a nearby window. Fisk is shocked and Lady Bullseye says not to look at it’s eyes. The demon asks, “What the hell is this?” Fisk says, “Oh ancient one, hear me now. A great injustice has been done in the city. Voices cry out in darkness.” The demon cuts him off and says “You may cut the masterpiece theater talk fat man. Voices crying out for what?” Fisk simply replies…”What else? Vengeance.”
Once again we go back to Shadowland. White Tiger with Hand ninjas confronts Luke cage, Iron Fist, Shang Chi, Misty Knight & Colleen Wing. She says that Daredevil sees no one and Shadowland is off limits to civilians. Then we go back to Daredevil’s throne room. Daredevil assumes they’ve reconsidered his offer. The group of heroes says they just wanted to talk. Murdock says there is nothing to discuss and the other heroes argue with him over his recent tactics. At this moment Spider Man enters the throne room from a nearby window.
Finally we go to the Shadowland dungeon. The cop from the first part of the issue is behind bars with some of his fellow officers. They discuss the rumors swirling regarding Shadowland. The officer regurgitates a lock pick and escapes his cell. He decides to check out the layout of the prison before freeing anyone else. As he looks around they hear a rumble. One of the officers says it sounds like a dinosaur. “Worse” says the cop. Ghost Rider has entered Shadowland. He easily dispatches some of the Hand ninjas with Hellfire. Laughing hysterically he races upward.
Finally, Daredevil is notified they’ve been breached. Daredevil blames it on Iron Fist, Luke Cage and friends. He says he knew they couldn’t be trusted. He orders the Hand to take them down. This issue closes with Cage, Iron Fist, Shang Chi, Spider-Man, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight throwing down with DD, Black Tarantula, White Tiger and Hand ninjas….
THE BATTLE FOR THE SOUL OF NEW YORK CONTINUES! The Heroic Age has begun… but Daredevil didn’t get the memo. As The Man Without Fear’s reign over Hell’s Kitchen continues, his allies and friends come together to try and, for one last time, put an end to his rule over The Kitchen. Will the Devil’s reign continue, or will the heroes triumph?
Moon Knight, still under the guise of Jake Lockley, fights his way through the dungeon of Shadowland as Ghost Rider tears through and leaves dead Hand ninjas in his wake. Moon Knight asks him why he is in Shadowland. Ghost Rider doesn’t know who summoned him and he is intent on figuring out who did so.
Back at the melee from last issue, Daredevil lifts his ban on killing and calls for the deaths of all opposing him. Daredevil displays an unusually high level of martial arts skill by defeating Iron Fist and Shang-Chi. During the battle, a large explosion rocks Shadowland and Punisher enters and opens fire on the Hand. The heroes flee through the hole created by the blast and Spider-Man seals the hole to prevent pursuit by the Hand. As they leave, they notice the general populace is now out on the streets fighting and rioting, apparently affected by the same “dark power” affecting Daredevil.
Elsewhere, Lady Bullseye cautions Kingpin about using the zugaikotsu warrior (Ghost Rider) and tells him that Ghost Rider will come after him. Kingpin says that the scroll that summoned the warrior will also protect him from the warrior’s wrath and that if Ghost Rider wants to be free of the magic that summoned him – the black magic of the Hand – he will have to confront the source of the magic. Kingpin’s plan is to let Ghost Rider strike at the heart of the Hand and come in afterward and gain control.
Back in Shadowland, Daredevil erroneously assumes that the delegation was a diversion what went down in the dungeon. Black Tarantula begins to question Daredevil’s attack on the heroes and Daredevil simply replies that they need better fighters. Daredevil instructs Typhoid Mary to follow him and bring a shovel. Moon Knight observes this conversation while hidden in the rafters. Daredevil and Typhoid Mary head to a graveyard and dig up Bullseye. Suddenly, Elektra appears and says she heard Daredevil was looking for fighters.
The heroes regroup in Harlem. Iron Fist and Shang-Chi note that Daredevil had never been capable of such martial arts prowess previously. Punisher suggests they are going to have to kill Daredevil. Master Izo appears and says he has learned the truth. The secret cadre at the heart of the Hand – the Snakeroot – have taken control of Daredevil and are using him as a vessel for the Beast of the Hand. The issue ends with Daredevil carrying Bullseye’s corpse, flanked by Elektra and Typhoid Mary.
The final battle for the soul of New York erupts in Hell’s Kitchen, and Daredevil is on the front lines…Hell, he IS the front line! Backed by the full power of the Hand, Daredevil is now more than a match for New York’s strongest heroes. With a new right-hand man, Matt Murdock will finally show those who stand against him what it truly means to be a Man Without Fear!
In the dungeons of Shadowland, Elektra and several Hand ninjas seal an access tunnel that is known only to those present and Daredevil. Once it is sealed, Elektra kills the ninjas and opens the tunnel for a group of heroes on the other side: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher, Spider-Man, Master Izo, Shang-Chi, and Wolverine. The group gathers and plans their attack. Elektra tells the group that if they do not move quickly enough, Daredevil will resurrect Bullseye. Master Izo tells them that the Beast has taken over Daredevil, but he should be able to cloud Daredevil’s senses long enough for them to get close and defeat him.
On a rooftop, Lady Bullseye asks Kingpin for permission to enter the battle. He tells her soon enough, but he has to move the “final pieces into position”.
In Shadowland’s main room, Daredevil attempts to resurrect Bullseye but is stopped by the group of heroes and realizes that Elektra betrayed him. The heroes engage Daredevil and eventually overtake him. However, Daredevil shakes off all the heroes, declaring that “there is no Murdock, only the Beast!”
With the help of his former enemy-turned-champion, Daredevil has thwarted his former friends and finds himself prepared to claim all of New York for himself. The chaos of Shadowland has reached a boiling point, and Daredevil himself may not survive to see the result!
